Congrats, Kimberly!

(CBS)
Heartfelt congratulations go out to our Kimberly Dozier, who was awarded a Peabody Award for her reporting on two amputees – who are both Iraq war veterans … and who are both women.

Receiving a Peabody award is a big accomplishment – it was modeled after the Pulitzer Prize, only 35 people took the honor this year, including CBS News' Scott Pelley, for a 60 Minutes piece, and ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff, who, like Kimberly, survived a near-fatal attack while reporting in Iraq.

Keep Moving, Folks. Nothing to See Here. Just Move Along...

It must be a slow day in the blogosphere, when our web siblings over at Public Eye have to stoop to stuff like this.

The horror, the horror.

Katie Couric's Notebook: Time With The Kids

Hi, everyone.

Think working mothers spend less time with children? Think again.

According to researchers, all moms are spending AT LEAST as much time with their kids as they did 40 years ago. And guess who's doing more housework? Dad. It's all in a new book, "Changing Rhythms of American Family Life."

Some of that is because moms have become wizards at multi-tasking. We've figured out how to take care of the kids, answer e-mails and cook dinner at the same time.

But the book also reports that parents feel pressure to raise the perfect child - and are investing time and energy trying to DO that. Some of the extra attention is also driven by fear. Parents are keeping closer tabs on kids because they're afraid for their safety.

If you're guilt-ridden about not spending enough time with your kids...hearken back to when WE were growing up. Our parents never worried obsessively about entertaining us.

And we turned out okay...I think.

That's a page from my notebook.

Setting Sail: A Blog Is Launched

Today we begin “Couric & Co.” Welcome! I’m glad you found us. Pull up a chair and stay a while. There’s a lot going on in the world, and we have a lot to talk about. And I hope this little corner of the internet will be the place to do just that.

We’re going to be surveying the landscape here, and pointing out a few of the more interesting and surprising things we see on the horizon. We’ll be swapping stories, sharing opinions, asking questions and generally just taking stock. In the little village that is CBS News, you might consider “Couric & Co” the coffee house on the corner, where something is always brewing.

I can’t be here all day, every day, so some visitors will be dropping by – the “company” of “Couric & Co.” We’ll be hearing from CBS News correspondents and producers, from different corners of the world, adding their voices to this conversation. And the editor, Greg Kandra, will be keeping an eye on things, too– throwing in his two cents, looking for whatever is new or notable, and otherwise offering free refills of piping hot news, with a side order of links. While you’re here, you might want to take a look at our Rules of Engagement, and Editor’s POV.

A footnote: out of curiosity, I did a little “Googling” for the word “blog.” And one of the first entries that popped up was a guy by the name of Henry Blogg . He lived long before the age of the internet. But his story is quite remarkable. He was apparently an accomplished sailor – a legendary lifeboatman, to be exact – who weathered fierce storms while doing his job, rowing out to sea. It took guts – and some muscle – to venture out into the unknown like that.

Reading his story reminded me of some wisdom that was passed on to me when I was deciding whether or not I should come to CBS. I was anxious about making a career change. But a good friend told me: “Katie, a boat is always safe in the harbor. But it’s not what it was built for.”

She was absolutely right.

And here I am.

Like Henry Blogg, this blog is shoving off from the harbor, and heading out to a mysterious and uncharted sea. The harbor was great. But, let’s face it: we’re supposed to be exploring the wider world. This is what we were built for. And that’s what we’ll be doing at “Couric & Co.”

So grab an oar. Take a deep breath. And let’s get going.

Hopefully, we won't all end up like Gilligan...

The Editor's POV

I have two things in common with Katie Couric.

Like her, I grew up in suburban Washington, D.C. — in my case, in Rockville, Md.

And, like her, I shared some memorable moments with Willard Scott. Mine occurred when I was 5 years old and appeared on Washington TV on "The Ronald McDonald Show." Willard was Ronald McDonald. I was filmed doing the twist.

My career in show business never quite recovered from that.
