Remembering the "Thunder"

Gatti was strangled to death in his sleep July 11, 2009, according to Brazilian police, who say blood was found on his wife's purse strap. His wife had trouble explaining the more than 10 hours she spent in their hotel room before realizing her husband was dead.

Arturo Gatti, right, faced off against boxing great Oscar De La Hoya in 2001. Gatti lost the match by technical knockout, but came roaring back three years later to claim the WBC junior welterweight title. He won 40 of 49 career fights, 31 by knockout.

As a fighter, Gatti, was notoriously tough and hard working and had won the loyalty of fans in his native Italy, as well as Montreal, where he was raised, and Jersey City, N.J., where he lived most of his adult life.
