"A Strange Loop" tops list with 11 Tony Award nominations 02:59

NEW YORK -- The nominations were announce Monday for the 75th annual Tony Award nominations.

As CBS2's Dave Carlin reports, the Broadway production with the most Tony Award nominations of the season is "A Strange Loop," with 11 for the musical. It has already won the Pulitzer Prize. it's a musical about writing a musical and grappling with identity, desire, and ambition.

Nominations were announced Monday morning by Adrienne Warren, who played Tina Turner, winning last season's Tony for Best Lead Actress in a Musical,. Her cohost for the announcement was thee-time Tony nominated star Joshua Henry.

"Not only are we coming back stronger than ever, it is the 75th anniversary of the Theater Wing's Tony awards," Warren said. 

"A Strange Loop" is in competition for the top prize for original musical with "Girl from the North Country," "MJ: The Musical," "Mr. Saturday Night," "Paradise Square, and "Six."

A special performance in Times Square Monday morning had "Six" in the spotlight. The cast was rocking and celebrating that the show picked up a total of eight Tony nominations.

"It's overwhelming but what's exciting is every night 1,200 people are leaping to their feet at the end of our show," said "Six" producer Kevin McCollum.

This event was to highlight a rich tradition of hit musicals coming to Broadway from London's West End, "Six" included.

For Best Musical Revival, the nominees are "Caroline, or Change," "Company" and "The Music Man."

The nominees for best play are "Clyde's,"  "Hangmen," "The Lehman Trilogy," "The Minutes," and "Skeleton Crew."

The Tony nominated Revival Plays are "American Buffalo, "for colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf," "How I Learned to Drive," "Take Me Out" and "Trouble in Mind," 

In acting categories, "Company" landed three in featured categories including one for Broadway luminary Patti Lupone, plus nods for costars Jennifer Simard and Matt Doyle. The revival of "Take Me Out" has nominations for three of its actors in the featured category: Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Jesse Williams and Michael Oberholtzer.

Some of the big name Hollywood stars pumping up this Broadway season are Hugh Jackman and Billy Crystal, among those up for Best Leading Actor in a musical. Crystal for "Mr. Saturday Night, Myles Frost for "MJ," Jackman for "The Music Man," Rob McClure for "Mrs. Doubtfire" and Jacquel Spivey for "A Strange Loop."

For Best Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical: Sharon D. Clarke, "Caroline, or Change,"  Carmen Cusack, "Flying Over Sunset," Sutton Foster, "The Music Man," Joaquina Kulakango, "Paradise Square" and Mare Winningham, "Girl from the North Country."

Revivals of "Funny Girl" and "Plaza Suite" did not feel Tony love to any great extent, although both shows picked up a single nomination each.

Ariana DeBose to host this year's event

Ariana DeBose, star of the screen and stage, will host this year's Tony Awards

DeBose recently played Anita in Stephen Spielberg's remake of "West Side Story" and won an Oscar for best supporting actress. She is also a theater veteran, with roles in "Summer: The Donna Summer Musical," "Hamilton," "A Bronx Tale," "Pippin," "Motown the Musical," "Bring It On: The Musical" and "Company."

"I'm coming home!" DeBose said in a statement Wednesday. "I'm so honored to celebrate 75 years of excellence in theatre, but more importantly every member of this community who poured themselves into making sure the lights of Broadway have the opportunity to shine brightly once again! This is a dream come true, and I'm excited to see you all on June 12th."

Tony Awards return to Radio City

The 75th annual Tony Awards will return to Radio City Music Hall on June 12.

The four-hour television and streaming event will be broadcast live coast to coast for the first time.

Coverage will begin at 7 p.m. with content streamed exclusively on Paramount+, followed by the awards ceremony on CBS2 starting at 8 p.m.
