Cops: Clergyman in Corvette pulled gun in apparent road rage incident

STUART, Fla. -- The rector of an Episcopal church in North Carolina is facing criminal charges in Florida after police say he pointed a semi-automatic handgun at another vehicle in an apparent road rage incident.

Media reports say 35-year-old Rev. William Rian Adams is charged with two counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. Martin County, Florida, records show he was released from jail on $15,000 bail.

The Florida Highway Patrol says Adams pulled his red Corvette in front of a pickup truck on Florida's Turnpike July 5 and started hitting the brakes, reports CBS affiliate WNCN.

Troopers say the truck tried to pass him. That's when they say Adams pulled out a gun and pointed it at the truck.

Troopers then stopped Adams in the Corvette. Troopers say Adams told them the truck pulled alongside him and the driver started yelling and screaming at him and threw a soda at his car, WNCN reports. Adams says he never pulled out his gun, a Glock 22, the station reports.

Records show Adams is rector of Calvary Episcopal Church in Fletcher, North Carolina.

CBS affiliate WPEC reports that Adams began there in September 2016 after he spent 10 years in the military as a chaplain.

Church officials didn't immediately respond to a call seeking comment and no attorney was listed for Adams.
