Video shows suspected NYC arsonist hurling Molotov cocktail
(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Police in New York have released surveillance video of a suspect in a string of firebombing attacks in Queens on New Year's Day
The incidents are being investigated as hate crimes.
On Sunday evening, the entrance to the Imam Al-Khoei Foundation building, a prominent Islamic cultural center, was struck by two Molotov cocktails. These are the types of bombs usually made of glass bottles filled with flammable liquid and corked with rags.
A private house that is used as a Hindu house of worship also was hit. A videotape released from a surveillance camera shows a car pulling up to the house Sunday night. Someone suddenly appears, lifts his right arm high and hurls a lit object that strikes the house and explodes into flames.
The suspect is described a black man, 25-30 years old, 5'8", and about 200 pounds, reports CBS New York. The suspect was last seen wearing a black jacket and baseball cap. The suspect was also driving a light-colored, four-door sedan.
Besides the private house and the Islamic center, the other targets in the suspected arson attacks were a corner store and another house.
No one was injured in any of the incidents and no suspects have been arrested. A news conference was planned for Tuesday.
Authorities have announced a $10,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in the case, reports CBS New York. Crime Stoppers is reportedly offering an additional $2,000 reward. All calls to 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) are kept anonymous. You can also give a tip via their website, or text your tip to CRIMES and enter TIP577.
