Answering Congress

The man who allegedly scaled the White House fence and was able to run through the front doors made it farther into the building than was previously reported, Sources tell CBS News senior White House correspondent Bill Plante that Omar J. Gonzalez ran unobstructed for 70 yards across the front lawn of the White House before entering through the North Portico. On the way, he brushed by a Secret Service officer with a drawn gun and overpowered another. The president and first lady were fuming. Members of Congress have taken note as well and will question the Secret Service director about the incident today.

"Umbrella revolution"

Hong Kong's leader has told thousands of demonstrators in the city's streets that the central government in China will not meet their demands by backing away from a decision to limit voting reforms but, as CBS News correspondent Seth Doane reports, the protesters aren't backing down, either. Instead of dispersing as the government requested, they were replenishing supplies this morning, and there was a sense that they intended to stay for awhile. In fact, says Doane, with China poised to celebrate its big "National Day" holiday tomorrow, crowds were only expected to grow in a show of defiance.

Supremes on marriage?

When the Supreme Court issued two major rulings last year regarding same-sex marriage, it sidestepped the fundamental question of whether same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. Yesterday, the high court's nine justices considered whether to take up seven marriage cases that would compel them to address that basic question. Amid thousands of other cases, the court reviewed seven challenging state bans on same-sex marriage in Virginia, Indiana, Wisconsin, Utah and Oklahoma. The court could say as soon as this week whether it plans to take up any of the cases in its upcoming term, which starts next week.

Hitting back

The University of Michigan's head football coach is answering critics who say he should lose his job. Brady Hoke defended the decision to let his quarterback stay on the field Saturday after taking a hit that left him appearing woozy. CBS News correspondent Don Dahler says an overnight report shows the QB did have a concussion and was never evaluated by a physician before returning to the field.

IUD comeback

Teen girls who are sexually active should use IUDs or hormonal implants -- long-acting birth control methods that are effective, safe and easy to use, the nation's most influential pediatricians' group recommends. CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon Lapook says these birth control methods do not prevent sexually transmitted diseases, and recommends the use of condoms in conjunction with them.

Give firstborn

Would you give up your firstborn child to access the Internet for free? As outrageous as this idea may seem, it's exactly what some people agreed to do while carelessly signing an agreement to use a public Wi-Fi hotspot in a recent experiment conducted in London.

Prince returns

Prince has broken his longest-ever recording drought with two new albums released today, and as always, he's doing it his way. The eccentric artist is continuing to push the envelope and attempting to keep his reign over pop music. CBS News correspondent Elaine Quijano has a preview of his much-anticipated new albums.
