The Beauty Of Fall

Autumn, Fall, Leaf, Leaves, foliage, tree branches AP

This column was written by CBS News Early Show co-anchor Harry Smith.

A friend of mine was leaving today for a weekend in Vermont. Leaf peeping. Hiking. A college football game.

I'm a sucker for fall. For me it's the best season. Maybe it's because we're still savoring the last days of warm sun but also really relishing the cool and even cold nights with the windows wide open and an extra blanket on the bed.

Autumn is a season of energy. Kids back to school. New plans and agendas at work. Here in New York the Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera have opened their seasons. There is a huge show of old Dutch paintings up the street. So much to do and see. And in Central Park a few trees are beginning to hint at the color changes soon to come.

There's melancholy in the air though as the season changes. We remember so vividly where we were in years past; of friends we've lost touch with; of time that passes too quickly. Soon nature will lie dormant around us but somehow we couldn't feel more alive.

Harry's daily commentary can be heard on many CBS Radio News affiliates across the country.
