"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" begins filming in New York; Plot synopsis revealed

New Yorkers' spidey senses must be tingling -- Columbia Pictures announced Wednesday that filming has officially begun on "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" in the Big Apple.

Andrew Garfield is suiting up once again as high school student Peter Parker. This time, he'll face off against the villain Electro, played by Jamie Foxx. Emma Stone and Sally Field, who starred with Garfield in last year's "The Amazing Spider-Man," will also be returning for this latest chapter. Other new cast members include Paul Giamatti, Shailene Woodley and Dane DeHaan.

The film's official plot synopsis reads: "In 'The Amazing Spider-Man 2,' for Peter Parker, life is busy -- between taking out the bad guys as Spider-Man and spending time with the person he loves, Gwen (Stone), high school graduation can't come quickly enough. Peter hasn't forgotten about the promise he made to Gwen's father to protect her by staying away -- but that's a promise he just can't keep. Things will change for Peter when a new villain, Electro, emerges, an old friend, Harry Osborn, returns, and Peter uncovers new clues about his past."

According to the press release, this sequel will be the first "Spider-Man" film in the history of the franchise to be filmed entirely in New York City and New York State.

"The Amazing Spider-Man" -- the first film in a planned reboot trilogy -- proved to be a box office smash last summer, taking in $140 million in its first six days in U.S. theaters.

"The Amazing Spider-Man 2" will be filmed in 3-D and is set to arrive in theaters on May 2, 2014.
