Teen girl and her police rescuer both hit by lightning in N.C.

TOPSAIL BEACH, N.C. -- A teen girl and a police sergeant were both struck by lightning on a North Carolina beach Sunday evening, according to reports.

The incident happened around 5 p.m. on the south end of Topsail beach, reports WECT-TV.

Topsail Beach Police Chief Sam Gervase said the teenage girl was struck first, and police sergeant Zach Cooke responded to the call to help.

After helping the girl get to medial treatment, Cooke himself was struck by lightning while leaving the beach.

The girl suffered burns on her ears and is being treated at UNC-Chapel Hill, reports CBS affiliate WNCT-TV.

Gervase said Cooke, a 10-year department veteran, only suffered minor injuries.
