GUILFORD, Vt. - Seven firefighters were apparently struck by lightning Wednesday while battling a blaze in southeastern Vermont but none was seriously injured, officials said.

Members of the Guilford Volunteer Fire Department and firefighters from other communities were working to extinguish a fire on East Mountain Road in Guilford when lightning hit "in close proximity," the Guilford department said on its Facebook page.

Seven firefighters were suspected of being hit by lightning. They were transported to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital in nearby Brattleboro.

"All firefighters were evaluated by medical personnel and no serious injuries reported," the hospital said in a news release.

Severe storms swept through the Northeast and New England on Wednesday, spawning heavy rains and lightning.
