Report: Person of interest questioned in girl's shooting death

CHICAGO - Police have a person of interest in custody in connection with the death of an 11-year-old girl who was struck by a stray bullet at a slumber party, reports CBS Chicago.

Shamiya Adams was at a friend's house in Chicago's Garfield Park neighborhood on Friday night when she was hit in the head and killed by a bullet fired from outside the home, according to the station.

A source close to the investigation revealed to CBS Chicago Tuesday night that a person of interest was being questioned by police. That same night, Mayor Rahm Emanuel met with the victim's family for the third time since the tragedy.

"I came here to give [the family] comfort and remind them they're always in everybody's thoughts and prayers," Emanuel told the station as he left the home. He would not comment on news of a possible arrest. "Even if I did [know], I couldn't talk about it," he said.

Authorities had said the search for the shooter was progressing rapidly.

"If you know anything, please keep the police involved, don't worry about being looked at as a snitch," Shaneetha Goodloe, Shamiya's mother, told CBS Chicago. "That bullet was not for her. I am just asking the community to do the right thing."

Memorial services for Shamiya will be held Saturday morning at the First Baptist Congregational Church, according to the station.
