Soetoro-Ng and her family will be moving from Hawaii next month, when her husband Konrad Ng takes up his position as resident scholar at the Smithsonian Institution's Asian Pacific American program. The family will stay until December before moving back to Hawaii.
Chicago lawyer and Mr. Obama's friend Alan King told the Times that the president would be "very happy to have Maya and her family close by." He also said that Mr. Obama and Soetoro-Ng "have a great relationship."
Soetoro-Ng and Mr. Obama share the same mother, Stanley Ann Dunham. They spent several years together in Indonesia and Hawaii before Dunham moved back to Indonesia with Soetoro-Ng and Mr. Obama stayed in Hawaii with his grandparents.
