N.C. teen dies after getting sick at football practice

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Guilford County school officials said a North Carolina teenager has died a day after getting sick at football practice.

District athletic director Leigh Hebbard told media outlets that the student was going to be a freshman in the fall at Page High School.

The teen, identified as 14-year-old Karson Cross, attended Cornerstone Charter Academy last school year, CBS affiliate WFMY reported.

"It is with heavy hearts we share with you that Karson Cross has passed away," the school posted on its Facebook page Wednesday. "Karson was an excellent student and will be greatly missed by everyone."

Hebbard said Karson was attending a conditioning workout around 5 p.m. Monday when he became ill and was taken to the hospital. Officials did not know if he lost consciousness before he got medical help.

He died Tuesday.

"You know, he was a Pirate. Whenever we lose a Pirate, it's difficult. We went out to the parents home today just to show our love and support," Page High School Principal Patrice Faison told WFMY.

Faison said Karson's parents were watching practice when he collapsed.

The school's athletic director said it was 85 to 87 degrees Monday evening, not hot enough to delay practice or do anything differently, WFMY reported.

School officials said the teen had a physical before starting practice and was an "A'' student.
