Long Story Short

OK, pop quiz, kids: Does this sound like an excerpt from a CBSNews.com story – or a snippet from a spam email?
…many normal men suffer "small-penis syndrome," urologists report.
If you guessed "CBSNews.com story," congratulations – gold star! Not only is this a CBSNews.com story, it has lately been, perhaps, the CBSNews.com story. It held the top spot on the "Most Popular" list for a few days and, despite having been posted back on June 1st, now sits comfortably in the #3 spot.

The story, from CBSNews.com partner WebMD, explains that while many men think they have "a truly tiny tinkler," most of them don't have anything to worry about. But they worry anyway! "It is very common for men to worry about the size of their penis," Urologists Kevan R. Wylie said in a release. "It is important that these concerns aren't dismissed as this can heighten concerns and anxieties."

At the NRO Media Blog, Greg Pollowitz is mocking CBSNews.com's decision to put the story at the bottom of its list of "top stories" on Saturday. He sarcastically writes: "I wonder if 60 Minutes will do a follow up on the last one in the list..."

Pollowitz has something of a point: This isn't really a "top story" by traditional journalistic standards. (Though it probably did relieve the private anxieties of more than a few CBSNews.com readers.) I don't really have a problem with a story like this getting semi-prominent play, though, even if it is, in the end, more Fark than news.

After all, the three other stories listed in "top stories" at that time concerned the death of the Chinese Vice Premier, Condoleeza Rice's comments on Iran, and a US attack on Somali militants. To include one lighter story in that mix doesn't strike me as An Affront To Journalism. And people actually seemed to want to read the story, which is a pretty strong argument for putting it where people can find it on the site.

So click away without shame, ladies and gentlemen. We won't tell.
