(CBS) NEW YORK - Yoselyn Ortega, the nanny accused of slaying two children in their Upper West Side apartment before stabbing herself woke up Sunday and asked about her family, sources said.

A source told the New York Post that Ortega, 50, suffered from a broken vertebra in a failed suicide attempt after she fatally stabbed 6-year-old Lucia and 2-year-old Leo Krim in the bathtub of their luxury Manhattan apartment on Thursday.

Ortega has since undergone surgery and is "talking a little," the source said.

Investigators returned Sunday to Ortega's bedside at a New York hospital for questioning, but she has hired a lawyer and wouldn't answer them, according to a source. She did speak to her doctor and "asked about her family."

According to CBS News, Ortega shares a Harlem apartment with her sister, niece and her 17-year-old son. A source said a search warrant executed on the nanny's apartment turned up no clues of a motive in the slayings of the Krim children.

The children are survived by their parents, Kevin and Marina Krim, and their 3-year-old sister, Nessie.

CBS News reports that Marina and Nessie Krim were coming from a swimming lesson and planned to meet Ortega, Lucia and Leo for a dance class Thursday evening. When Ortega never showed up, Marina Krim returned home to find the nanny stabbing herself in the throat and her two young children dead in the bathroom.

NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Ortega remained intubated Sunday.
