(CBS) - James Holmes, the man suspected of opening fire in a crowded movie theater early Friday, wore tactical gear and carried at least three different weapons, including an assault rifle, said Aurora Police Chief Daniel Oates Friday.

Oates told reporters that police are confident that Holmes, 24, acted alone when he allegedly opened fire in a crowded movie theater.

"We are not looking for any other suspects," said Oates.

According to Oates, Holmes dressed all in black for the attack, wearing a tactical helmet, vest and leggings, as well as throat and groin protectors. Oates said 71 people were shot during the midnight screening of the new Batman movie, "The Dark Knight Rises."

Oates said that Holmes used an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington shotgun and a 40-caliber Glock handgun during the attack. He also said police found a second 40-caliber Glock handgun in the suspect's car, which was parked just outside the back door of the theater. All four weapons were bought legally in the state of Colorado within the past two months.

According to Oates, Holmes surrendered "without any significant incidence" minutes after the attack.

The FBI is working with the Aurora Police Department and Oates confirmed that Holmes' apartment was "booby-trapped" with what appear to be incendiary and chemical devices.

"They're linked together with all kinds of wires," said Oates. "As a laymen it's not something I've ever seen before."

Oates would not speculate on the motive of the alleged shooter.
