Jack Taylor, who set NCAA record with 138 points in game, out for season with broken wrist

GRINNELL, Iowa Jack Taylor, who set the NCAA scoring record with 138 points in a game in November, is out for the season after breaking his wrist.

Grinnell College spokesman Ted Schultz says Taylor fractured the radius on his shooting arm during a 119-117 win over rival Cornell (Iowa) on Wednesday.

Taylor will likely have surgery within a week and be out 2-3 months, costing the sensational sophomore the rest of the season.

Taylor captured the attention of the basketball world when he dropped 138 points against Faith Baptist Bible College on Nov. 12, shattering the previous mark by 25 points.

Taylor finishes his season averaging 36.3 points per game in leading the Pioneers to a 9-3 record.

But, as "CBS This Morning" reported in November, many fans and pundits questioned whether Taylor's record night was legitimate.

WFAN sports talk radio host Mike Francesa said, "It's a gimmick! It's not real. They were taking the ball, rebounding it and throwing it back to him. They didn't show you that video."

Taylor took 108 shots -- that's one every 20 seconds.

"I really didn't think it was possible...ultimately absurd," Columbia University head basketball coach Kyle Smith said in November. "If it was part of competing to win in a tight game -- they need 138 to win, that's fine, but if it's a rout, and we're doing it for attention-seeking purposes, I don't see the benefit in that for anyone."
