"Jack Reacher" trailer: Tom Cruise is "not a hero"

A new trailer for "Jack Reacher" has arrived, giving fans of Lee Child's books another look at Tom Cruise portraying the author's ex-military-cop character.

"Do you think I'm a hero?" he asks a kidnapper in the new clip. "I am not a hero."

The film revolves around Reacher's investigation into a case involving a military sniper accused of gunning down five civilians.

"They want me to run, but I'll finish this," Cruise says as Reacher. "I have nothing to lose, if you're smart, that scares you."

Some have questioned whether Cruise was the right choice to play Reacher, who is described in Child's books as being a hulking, six-foot-five vigilante. But Child himself has given Cruise - who is seen in the trailer kicking down doors, beating up bad guys and speeding off in a car - his seal of approval.

"Jack Reacher," directed by Christopher McQuarrie, also stars Rosamund Pike, Robert Duvall and Warner Herzog. The film arrives in theaters on Dec. 21.
