As much of the rest of America dives headlong into a shopping spree over Thanksgiving weekend, President Obama and his family got in on the action with a Saturday afternoon trip to Politics and Prose, a bookstore in Northwest Washington. The president and daughters Malia and Sasha browsed books and mingled with the crowd in the store, which was established in 1984 and is currently owned by Bradley Graham and Lissa Muscatine.
Ahead of his trip, the president promoted the stop on Twitter, encouraging others to participate in Small Business Saturday, an event designed to bring mom-and-pop stores some of the Black Friday insanity seen at bigger retailers.

Asked what he bought, the president said he purchased a “long list” of books, including titles for every age group. Among his selections: “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini, “My Antonia” by Willa Cather, and “Lowland” by Jhumpa Lahiri.
After he was finished, the president told those present to “have a great holiday,” and he departed as his fellow shoppers applauded.
