"DWTS" recap: A Halloween special and elimination

Monday night's episode of "Dancing with the Stars" gave us a number of things to get very excited about.

First and foremost, it was the show's Halloween episode, meaning tons of strange costumes and bizarre stories.

Also, the show ended in a surprisingly entertaining team competition, in which four couples went up against four other couples in a freestyle choreographed dance-off.

And finally, this was the week Len Goodman returned to the judges' panel, and he brought a whole lot of harsh criticism and technical know-how with him.

So let's take a look at some of the best, worst and weirdest moments of the evening.

THE BEST

Alfonso's Big Announcement

In the one of the sweetest moment from the season thus far, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Alfonso Ribeiro took time after his dance to wish his infant son a happy first birthday. Then he announced that he and his wife, Angel Unkrich, are expecting a brand new bundle of joy, much to the excitement of the cheering audience.

The Triumphant Return Of Len Goodman

After weeks of our favorite English judge being M.I.A., Goodman made his return by stepping out of a jet black coffin and bellowing, "I'm baaack!" As it turns out, the stars should have taken this as a threat, because he cut deep all night. It was nice to have a judge that actually knows what good dancing is, unlike Jessie J and Pitbull.

Bethany and Derek's Devilish Dance

Set to the powerful and ominous "Run Boy Run" by Woodkid, and backed by demonic, hooded kettle drummers, Bethany Mota and Derek Hough brought a fiery passion to their Paso Doble. Also, Bethany's hair looked like a mix between Angelina Jolie's Maleficent and Gary Oldman's Dracula.

Janel's "Pretty Little Liars" Number

Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy's palpable chemistry was put to great use in a sexy, sharp, "Pretty Little Liar"-themed routine that ended with Janel and Val standing behind a white curtain, only visible as silhouettes. Then Janel clubs Val over the head, killing him. So romantic!

THE WORST

When Bruno Tried To Kill Julianne

Bruno Tonioli is a very physical person, and he often touches Julianne Hough in ways that really just make everyone uncomfortable. So things got really weird when Bruno accidentally grabbed Julianne and then fell out of his chair, pulling her down on top of him. Julianne might need to invest in some mace.

Michael Waltrip Does the Impossible

Who knew it was possible to make The Charlie Daniels Band's "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" boring? The race car driver and his pro partner Emma Slater were supposed to be doing a jive and that jive was set to one of the fastest country songs there is -- but Michael's slow, lumbering stumble just wasn't up to snuff.

THE WEIRDEST

Tommy Chong' Uncanny Ghost Resemblance

Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd dressed like '20s-era socialites and danced to Frank Sinatra's "Old Black Magic." While Tommy impressed the judges with his quick step, the most amazing part of the whole performance was how much Tommy Chong wearing a top hat looked exactly like a ghost from Disneyland's Haunted Mansion. On a side note, it was revealed that Tommy was the oldest celeb to have ever made it this far on DWTS, which brought a proud tear to Peta's eye.

Janel Parrish Could Be A Scream Queen

Because it's a Halloween episode, the producers thought it would be hilarious to scare the stars and pros by having people in creepy clown masks startle them. Well, it wasn't exactly hilarious, but it did prove that Janel had what it took to be one of cinema's classic scream queens. When a masked monster startled her during a pre-recorded interview she screamed her lungs out and, like anyone in a horror movie, simply froze up in fear.

Sadie Robertson Gets Eaten By Zombies

While this was actually one of the more entertaining performances of the whole night, the routine was just too weird to ignore. Mark Ballas was the dead-eyed zombie leader of a group of flesh eaters, and they chased Sadie -- who was dressed like an 11-year-old girl with a teddy bear -- around a graveyard. Despite the dancers' best efforts, most of the judges felt like the props, costumes and story over-shadowed the routine.

FINAL SCORES:

Bethany Mota and Derek Hough - 39

Alfonso Ribeiro and Witney Carson - 36

Lea Thompson and Artem Chigvintsev - 34

Janel Parrish and Val Chmerkovskiy - 31

Sadie Robertson and Mark Ballas - 30

Tommy Chong and Peta Murgatroyd - 28

Antonio Sabato, Jr. and Cheryl Burke - 27

Michael Waltrip and Emma Slater - 20

ELIMINATION (WARNING: SPOILERS)

Alfonso, Sadie, Antonio and Tommy ended up on the chopping block at the end of the night. As expected, Alfonso and Sadie were immediately safe, meaning it really came down to Tommy and Antonio.

Unfortunately, Antonio just couldn't keep up with the pace of the show and ended up getting the axe. Meaning Tommy Chong extends his record of "oldest contestant to get this far" even further.

Next week, "DWTS" pays tribute to the great dynamic duos in history and pulp culture including, as host Tom Bergeron informs us, "Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde, Batman and Robin [and] Adam and Eve."
