(CBS/AP) SALT LAKE CITY - As hunting dogs go, this one's got better aim than most.

A Utah duck hunter was shot in the buttocks, when his dog stepped on a shotgun and sprayed him with birdshot.

The wounded 46-year-old man had laid his 12-gauge shotgun across the bow of a boat, when he got out of the vessel to move decoys, said Sheriff's Deputy Kevin Potter. Potter says it wasn't clear whether the safety was on the gun when it went off.

Potter says the hunter, who briefly became the hunted, was hit from about 10 feet away with 27 pellets of birdshot, but he wasn't seriously injured, partly because he was wearing waders.  He was treated at a nearby hospital.

His canine companion could be in the running for hunting dog of the year.
