Caught on Tape: Officer Hits Inmate

A corrections officer in Berkeley County, S.C., has been assigned to desk duty while investigators look into the circumstances surrounding an incident involving an inmate.

The Berkeley County Sheriff's office says Officer Robert Thomas was defending himself after the suspect spit on him.

Surveillance video from the county detention center shows Thomas slapping and punching 44-year-old Thomas Howard Simmons, Jr.

Police said Simmons had been arrested for disorderly conduct.
