Calif. cop shot by sex assault suspect

OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland police say an officer is in stable condition after being shot by a sexual assault suspect during a shootout.

The shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. Monday when officers went to a home to follow up on a sexual assault reported the previous night.

Police Chief Sean Whent says the suspect came out of the house with a rifle and immediately began shooting. One officer was shot. Two other officers returned fire, hitting the man. He died from his wounds.

More than 30 shots were exchanged, reports CBS San Francisco.

The wounded officer underwent surgery at a hospital, where the officer was in stable condition.

Neither the officer nor the suspect was identified.
