(CBS/AP) SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A woman has pleaded not guilty to murder in the death of her 5-year-old daughter, who was found in the trunk of a parked car in a quiet Sacramento neighborhood last Thursday.
According to CBS Sacramento, 29-year-old Aquelin Talamantes entered the plea Monday.
Along with the murder charge, prosecutors filed a second allegation of assault on a young child.
The girl was found in the car's trunk last week by officers conducting a welfare check requested by concerned family members. Police suspect she was injured at her home in Davis, and then put in the trunk by her mom and brought to Sacramento.
The girl, identified as Tatianna Garcia, died at a hospital.
The grandmother of the child, Martha Garcia, told the station that Talamantes, the victim's father, and Tatianna had been living at her home for nearly three years. After the couple split, Garcia said, a bitter custody battle began.
Talamantes was ordered to return to court Oct. 15.
