Top 5 cities for single women in 2013

(MoneyWatch) If you're a single woman, you know that dating is often more like a horror film than a romantic comedy. After a few awkward blind dates, it's easy to throw up your hands and surrender to the idea of being single for life. But don't fret -- Rent.com has drawn up a list of the top five cities for single women. Each one has more single men than women in the 18-to-34 age range, decent job opportunities and plenty of fun dating activities.

Los Angeles
Median rent: $1,986 per month

When you think hip, attractive singles, L.A. is probably one of the first places that comes to mind. According to finance publication Kiplinger, just over 54 percent of the population is single, which means there's a pretty good chance you'll find a date just hanging out at a local coffee shop.

And while the stereotype is that everyone just wants to be an actor or model, there are plenty of men working traditional nine-to-five gigs. Whether you like hitting the beach or the newest restaurants, L.A. boasts plenty of date spots to enjoy with your new beau.

Seattle
Median rent: $1,528 per month

It's known as the birthplace of grunge rock and Starbucks, but Seattle has plenty of other perks for residents to enjoy. According to The Daily Beast, single men and women are evenly matched -- 59 percent of men are single, as are 60 percent of women.

If you're looking for a smart guy, this is the place for you -- many residents work for companies like Microsoft, Amazon and Boeing. Once you've met your match, head to a local bar to check out some live music, or enjoy the scenery with a boat ride on Lake Union.

Phoenix
Median rent: $711

Phoenix is a hotspot for singles -- both literally and figuratively. With temperatures averaging around 100 degrees in the summer and staying in the 60s for most of the winter, it's the perfect place to be if you love the heat.

It's also the perfect place to meet the man of your dreams, since 54 percent of the men are single, according to The Daily Beast. And if you love a guy who enjoys the outdoors, there's plenty of those. From off-roading and hiking to mountain biking and camping, there's always something to do outside.

San Diego
Median rent: $1,555

California's second-largest city has it all: a bustling downtown, beautiful scenery and plenty of single men -- roughly 55 percent of the male population according to The Daily Beast. Hard-working residents are employed in a number of industries, including software, biotechnology and telecommunications, among others.

When you have some free time, you and your man can enjoy the 70 miles of beachfront or one of the 15 local museums.

San Jose
Median rent: $1,733

If you're looking for a tech-savvy mate, this is the place for you. Home to Silicon Valley, there are plenty of smart, single guys close at hand. Forty-seven percent of the male population is single, and the average income in San Jose is $65,012, which means you have a good chance of meeting an independent, self-sufficient guy looking to have a great time.

Get to know each other at one of San Jose's great local museums or restaurants, or head to one of the comedy clubs downtown.
