GROUND FLOOR
1. East Wing Most visitors to the White House enter through the East Wing Lobby, built in 1942, where portraits of presidents and first ladies hang on either side of the wood-paneled hall. The East Wing leads to the Garden Room, from which a glass-enclosed colonnade leads to the Ground Floor of the White House. The garden, named the Jacqueline Kennedy Garden in 1965 by Lady Bird Johnson, contains a variety of flowering trees, shrubs, and flower beds. Primarily, it is used by the first lady as an informal reception area. The East Wing also leads to the East Foyer, where a changing exhibit shows photographs of visits of heads of state.
