The heat of the hydrogen fire weakens the external tank further and at 72 seconds the hydrogen tank ruptures, the force of which also bursts the neighboring oxygen tank. A giant white vapor cloud is created and at about 74 seconds the external tank explodes in a giant fireball, destroying the shuttle and crew.
