Bundy was a Harvard professor and dean who joined the President John Kennedy administration in 1961 as head of the national security council staff, a post he continued to hold under President Lyndon Johnson until 1966. He was known as one of the "wise men" who urged Johnson to de-escalate the war in 1968.
