Educated in Paris, Saloth Sar (later calling himself Pol Pot) was originally trained by his North Vietnamese comrades and led the eventual overthrow of Cambodia's monarchy in 1975 with the final invasion of the capital, Phnompenh. The Cambodian Communist leader slaughtered an estimated two million of his own people -- a quarter of the population -- in an effort to make Cambodia an agricultural utopia.
