Pope John Paul II touches the forehead of Dr. Francesco Crucitti, the pope's surgeon who died of cancer at age 67. Crucitti operated on John Paul three times. In 1981, Crucitti led the team that operated on the pontiff after he was shot in the abdomen. In 1992, he removed a benign tumor from the pope's colon and in 1996 he took out an inflamed appendix.
