Mehmet Ali Agca, the Turk who shot Pope John Paul II in 1981, sits in jail in Italy. In mid 1997, two Turkish hijackers - seeking publicity for Agca - hijacked a plane en route from Malta to Istanbul. The hijackers, wanting to make "a statement of solidarity" with Agca, surrendered at Cologne's airport on June 9, 1997 and freed 80 crew members and passengers.
