GOVERNOR

- Democratic Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine soundly defeated Republican Jerry Kilgore, a former attorney general, in a closely watched contest to succeed popular Democratic Gov. Mark Warner, who could not run for re-election due to term limits.

CANDIDATES

  • Democrat Winner: Tim Kaine, 47, is completing his first term as Virginia's lieutenant governor. He previously served as mayor of Richmond and was a member of the Richmond City Council for seven years. Kaine was an attorney and taught courses on legal ethics at the University of Richmond Law School. Kaine is a graduate of the University of Missouri and Harvard Law School. He is married to Judge Anne Holton of the Richmond Juvenile Court. Kaine and his wife have three children.
  • Republican Jerry Kilgore, 44, is completing his first term as Virginia's attorney general. He previously served as secretary of public safety, vice chairman of the Commission on Juvenile Justice Reform, assistant U.S. attorney for the Western District of Virginia, assistant commonwealth's attorney for Scott County as well as both a state and federal prosecutor. Kilgore is a graduate from Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary and University of Virginia's College at Wise. Kilgore is a partner with Williams Mullen, a Richmond-based law firm. He is married to a former public school teacher. Kilgore and his wife have two children.
  • Russ Potts, 66, an Independent, is currently serving his fourth term as a Republican senator from Virginia's 27th district and chairs the Senate Education and Health Committee. Potts previously was the sports editor of Winchester Star, director of sports promotion at the University of Maryland, assistant athletic director at Maryland, director of athletics at Southern Methodist University, and vice president of the Chicago White Sox. He founded Russ Potts Productions, Inc., a small business promoting sports events. Potts graduated from the University of Maryland. He is married to a former elementary school teacher. Her has three children and 1 grandchild.
