- Former City Councilman Bob O'Connor, a Democrat, defeated GOP lawyer Joe Weinroth in a city that has not elected a Republican mayor since the Depression. Incumbent Tom Murphy decided not to seek a fourth term.

CANDIDATES
Democrat Winner: Bob O'Connor, 61, a three-time candidate and former city council president, won a contested Democratic primary in May. His public service career began in 1992, and before then he was vice president of operations for Pappan Enterprises, a franchise of Marriott Corporation. He has served on the board of directors of Carnegie-Mellon University, Gateway Rehabilitation Institute, the Sudden Infant death Syndrome Alliance, The Caring Foundation and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. O'Connor and his wife Judy, have three children and three granddaughters.
Republican Joe Weinroth, 46, a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh,became a practicing attorney for Pitt Law in 1983. He entered electoral politics in 2001, and in 2002 was elected to the State Republican Committee, representing State Senate District 43. In 2003, he was elected Vice-Chair of the Republican Committee of Pittsburgh.
