MAYOR: NEW YORK CITY

- Billionaire Republican Mayor Michael Bloomberg routed former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer in this heavily Democratic city and was on pace to surpass his 2001 spending record of $74 million.

CANDIDATES

  • Incumbent Mayor Winner: Michael R. Bloomberg, 63, a Republican, won a second term. A lifelong member of the Democratic Party, Bloomberg decided to run for mayor as a Republican in 2001. He was endorsed by former NYC mayors Rudy Giuliani and Ed Koch. Prior to the election, he worked for Salomon Brothers on Wall Street and founded Bloomberg L.P. Bloomberg graduated from Johns Hopkins University and Harvard. He served as the chairman of the board at Hopkins.
  • Democratic challenger Fernando Ferrer, 55, ran for mayor in 2001, losing the nomination to Mark Green. Ferrer is a New York native and attended New York University. He has served as a City Council member, Bronx Borough president, and later, as president of the Drum Major Institute for Public Policy. Ferrer won a four-way Democratic primary on Sept. 13, and barely avoided a runoff against the second-place finisher with just over 40 percent of the vote.

    MAYOR: BUFFALO

    - Democrat Byron Brown defeated Kevin Helfer by a comfortable margin. Incumbent Mayor Anthony Masiello, a Democrat, did not seek re-election.

    CANDIDATES

  • Democrat Winner: Byron Brown has been a state senator since 2001 and was first elected to public office in 1995 as Common Councilmember. He has served in several staff positions with local governments in New York. Brown sits on several boards including the Western New York Public Broadcasting Service, the Boy Scout Council of Western New York, the Community Action Organization of Erie County, and the Humboldt Branch of the YMCA. Brown was a delegate to the 1992, 2000 and 2004 Democratic National Conventions.

    Republican Kevin Helfer is a former three-term Common Councilmember and current executive director of Buffalo Civic Auto Ramps, a nonprofit group that manages downtown parking garages. He is the former commissioner of Erie County's Social Services Department.
