- Democratic Sen. Jon Corzine easily beat Republican businessman Doug Forrester after a sharply negative campaign to succeed acting Democratic Gov. Richard J. Codey. The multimillionaires spent $70 million, more than double the previous record for a New Jersey governor's race.
CANDIDATES
Democrat Winner: Sen. Jon Corzine, 58, is currently serving his first term as senator. Corzine previously served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve. He worked at the Continental Illinois National Bank in Chicago and went to business school at the University of Chicago. He was the CEO and chairman of Goldman Sachs. He is divorced. His net worth is estimated to be more than $125 million and he has poured millions of his own money into his campaign.
Republican Doug Forrester, 52, served as assistant state treasurer, pension director and mayor of West Windsor, N.J. Forrester founded Benecard Services, Inc., a small business providing prescription drug coverage and is a long-time member of the Mercer County Republican Organization. Forrester is married with three children. His net worth is said to be over $50 million and he has also spent a significant amount of his own money in this campaign.
