CANDIDATES
Winner: Thomas M. Menino, 63, a Democrat, is the first Italian-American mayor of Boston. Menino was first elected in 1993, defeating State Rep. Jim Brett in a landslide with 64 percent of the vote. He ran unopposed for a second term in 1997, and in 2001 soundly defeated Boston City Councilor Peggy Davis-Mullen for a third term with 76 percent of the vote. Should he complete this fourth term, he will tie former mayor Kevin White as the longest-serving mayor of Boston.
Maura A. Hennigan is a Democrat and a member of the Boston City Council for 24 years.
She was the first woman to head the Ways and Means Committee, which she chaired for seven years. Hennigan has also served as chairman of Government Operations, the Committee on Veterans and Veterans Service Organization, and the Special Committee on Equity. She has served as a member of the Housing, Public Health and Urban Resources Committees.
In 2001 she became the chairman of the Economic and Development Committee.
