2005 is considered an odd-year election as most elections are held in even-numbered years. Even so, voters in a number of states headed to the polls on Nov. 8, 2005.
New Jersey and Virginia, the only two states that elect governors the year after a presidential election, do so in 2005. In 2006, voters in 36 states will elect a governor.
According to the U.S. Conference of Mayors, 493 medium- and large-sized cities had municipal elections scheduled throughout 2005. Mayoral races in 15 major U.S. cities
are highlighted here.
Voters in seven states weighed in on 39 measures ranging from same-sex marriage and parental notification on abortion to Congressional redistricting and teacher tenure.
