CANDIDATES
Democratic incumbent: Winner: Shirley Franklin, 60, is Atlanta's first female mayor as well as the first black woman to be the mayor of any major southern city. She previously was the Commissioner of Cultural Affairs and was subsequently named Chief Administrative Officer and City Manager for Mayor Andrew Young. Franklin succeeded Bill Campbell after winning the 2001 city-wide election with 50 percent of the vote. A graduate of Howard University and the University of Pennsylvania, she was recently named one of "America’s Best Leaders" by U.S. News & World Report.
Dave Walker, 60, is an East Atlanta resident and in 2001, raised money to run for a mayoral race but decided instead to run for an at-large council seat and lost. In 1997, he ran unsuccessfully for council president.
Glen Wrightson, 53, graduated from Wake Forest University with a BA in business administration. Walker also spent 27 years as a consultant to utility companies.
James Harris, 57, is a textile factory worker and write-in candidate. He is a national committee member of the Socialist Workers Party. Harris lives in the Old Fourth Ward neighborhood and has not fundraised much for his campaign. He says he would like to promote causes that benefit the working class.
