CANDIDATES
Republican Mayor Winner: Rick Baker was elected to his first term in 2001. He received his B.S. and M.B.A. from Florida State University. Before becoming mayor, Baker practiced corporate and business law for 20 years, and was president of Fisher and Sauls, P.A., a law firm in St. Petersburg. Baker is a published author and wrote, "Mangroves to Major Leagues," which provides an early historical account of St. Petersburg. He and his wife, Joyce, have two children.
Democratic challenger Ed Helm served as a civil rights lawyer with the U.S. Dept. of Labor for 26 years before retiring from government service in 2002. He is a graduate of the Columbus School of Law at the Catholic University of America and founder of the First Progressive Club of St. Petersburg. Helm and his wife, Adrien, have four children.
