MAYOR: SAN DIEGO

- Jerry Sanders defeated city councilwoman Donna Frye with a campaign that trumpeted his record of turning around troubled organizations.

CANDIDATES

  • Democrat Donna Frye, 52, has been a council member since 2001 and won the July 26 primary with 43 percent of the vote. Frye is a surf-shop owner who says she uses her experience in owning a business to help her run the city as a member of the city council. Frye grew up and lives in Clairemont with her husband, her mother, and their dog.
  • Republican Winner: Jerry Sanders, 55, served as San Diego's police chief from 1993-1999 and spent 26 years on the police force. He has served as United Way of San Diego County president and CEO and been on the board of the local Red Cross chapter. He is now the board chairman of the San Diego Police Foundation and serves on various other boards and foundations. He and his wife have two daughters.

    STATE ISSUES

    Four measures promoted by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger:
  • Rejected: Prop 74: Make teachers work five years instead of two to pass probation.
  • Rejected: Prop 75: Require public employee unions to get members' permission before dues could be used for political purposes.
  • Rejected:Prop 76: Cap state spending, give governor more power to make budget cuts.
  • Rejected: Prop 77: Shift power over redistricting from lawmakers to a panel of retired judges.

    OTHER MEASURES:
  • Rejected: Prop 73: Require parents to be notified when a minor seeks an abortion.
  • Rejected: Prop 78: Create a program for prescription drug discounts.
  • Rejected: Prop 79: Re-regulate state's energy market, requiring electric service providers to be controlled by California Public Utilities Commission.

    U.S. HOUSE: 48th DISTRICT

    - Runoff election Dec. 6
    - Rep. Christopher Cox, R-Calif., resigned on Aug. 2, 2005, following his appointment by President George W. Bush to chair the Securities and Exchange Commission. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger called a special election which was held on Oct. 4, 2005.

  • Democrat Steve Young is running against Republican John Campbell to fill the vacancy left by former Rep. Cox.
