LEEDS

Three of the four suspects lived in Leeds, which is about 185 miles north of London. According to Britain's Press Association, on the day of the attacks the men drove a rental car from here to Luton, where they boarded a commuter train.

Also linked to Leeds is Magdy el-Nashar, a 33-year-old PhD biology student who was arrested July 15, 2005, in Cairo. The Egyptian-born academic recently taught chemistry at Leeds University, and is believed to have rented one of the homes being searched in Leeds.

Police obtained six warrants and searched at least six homes here on July 13, 2005. British soldiers blasted their way into one of the homes, which was unoccupied, looking for explosives and computer clues.

Leeds has a population of about 715,000. About 15 percent of residents are Muslim, and many come from a tight-knit Pakistani community.
