EGYPT

At the request of the British government, on July 15, 2005, authorities in Cairo detained Magdy el-Nashar, an Egyptian chemist who obtained a doctorate from Leeds University in 2005. The British government suspected him of links to some of the four bombers, three of whom were from Leeds.

The Egyptian Interior Ministry said el-Nashar was released Aug. 9, 2005, after authorities found no evidence against him and no links to the bombings or to al Qaeda. At the time of the bombings, British media reported that traces of explosives were found in el-Nashar's Leeds apartment, but the reports were never confirmed.
