Torrential rains lashed India starting July 26, 2005, largely cutting off the city of Bombay from the rest of the country. In the end, the death toll in Bombay and surrounding areas approached 1,000. Drains were unable to handle the deluge, and tens of thousands of people were stranded for hours on streets that became rivers.
