ANABOLIC STEROIDS:
These drugs help build strength by increasing the body's level of testosterone. Tests can detect some steroids but not all. Those who use these drugs may have liver problems later in life.

FUROSEMIDE:
This drug is a powerful diuretic that is reportedly used by those who want to lose weight quickly or who want to mask the presence of another drug, such as a steroid.

EPO:
Erythropoietien (EPO) is a hormone that is produced naturally by the kidney. It increases production of red blood cells. Extra doses allow athletes to produce much more oxygen. One side effect: when blood has more red blood cells, it thickens, and can clog arteries. A French author says that he has documented 80 competitive bicycle riders who died in the 80s and 90s because of EPO related heart ailments. There is no foolproof way to test for the use of EPO. The drug benefits endurance athletes: bicyclists, long distance runners and cross country skiers. It boosts endurance by as much as 15 percent.

ACTOVEGIN:
Actovegin reportedly enhances oxygen delivery to the brain. It is so new that it has not yet been banned by International Olympic Committee.

HUMAN GROWTH HORMONE:
This drug increases muscle mass and lowers body fat. It is used by athletes who require explosive strength, such as sprinters and weightlifters.
