Archbishop emeritus of Detroit, Szoka was born of Polish immigrants in Grand Rapids, Mich. He was ordained a priest in 1954 in Marquette and in 1955, he became secretary to the Bishop of Marquette. During the period from 1955 to 1962, he also served as chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital. In 1981 he was named Archbishop of Detroit and he served as president of the Prefecture of Economic Affairs of the Holy See from January 1990 to October 1997.
