In January 2001, McCarrick, a New Yorker by birth, was installed as archbishop of Washington, D.C., after nearly 15 years as head of the diocese of Newark, N.J., another East Coast city with ethnic diversity. Washington is the headquarters of the U.S. Conference of Bishops, and he has been an expert for U.S. bishops on international relations.

He also was bishop of Metuchen, N.J.; auxiliary bishop of New York and president of the Catholic University of Puerto Rico. He holds a holds sociology doctorate from Catholic University of America.

Archdiocese officials won't discuss numbers of priests accused or settlements made. It has hired a state parole officer to monitor a priest who has been the subject of three sex-abuse allegations, all denied and none of them confirmed.
