|ARCHBISHOP OF DETROIT
ADAM JOSEPH MAIDA
|Birth Date: March 18, 1930
Cardinal Since: Feb. 28, 1994 Title: Cardinal Priest of Ss. Vitale, Valeria, Gervasio e Protasio
Parishioners: 1.4 million
Maida was ordained in 1956 and became bishop of Green Bay, Wis., in 1984. He was named archbishop in Detroit in 1990.
A lawyer with canon and civil law degrees, he has created three ecumenical private schools in Detroit to provide "values-centered" education to poor children, and has been active in trying to rejuvenate poverty-ridden sections of downtown Detroit. He has also led a drive to build a library-museum in Pope John Paul II's name in Washington.
He also was vice chancellor and general counsel for Pittsburgh diocese.
The archdiocese said it has investigated up to 18 priests for sexual misconduct since 1988 and removed about 12. A spokesman said the archdiocese is not aware of "any priest in parish ministry now that has a credible allegation against them." The archdiocese made a cash settlement several years ago with a man who said a priest sexually molested him, though the priest remained as a pastor until earlier this month. Another priest left his church last month after accusations of abuse, but church officials have not discussed details.
