He retired as archbishop of Washington, having served from 1980 to 2000.

Before taking the Washington post, he was bishop of Cleveland; auxiliary bishop of Saginaw, Mich.; and seminary rector in the United States and Rome. Hickey did not attend the April 23 Vatican summit because he wasn't physically able to make the trip.

Having reached age 80, he cannot vote in papal elections.
