In 1997, the Diocese of Dallas was hit with a record-breaking verdict of nearly $120 million after being accused in a lawsuit of allowing a priest to molest altar boys and conspiring to cover it up. The verdict was ultimately cut by about three-quarters on appeal, but the diocese had to mortgage and sell property to pay $11 million that its insurance didn't cover in the more than $30 million settlement against pedophile and former priest Rudy Kos. The nine altar boys who said they were molested by Kos received $23.4 million.
