Former priest James Beine was dismissed from the clergy in 1977, facing accusations he sexually molested nine boys while working as a priest in two St. Louis-area parishes. The church spent $110,000 to settle two of the lawsuits.

The Archdiocese of St. Louis said it had paid about $1.6 million over the past 20 years to people who claim they were molested by Roman Catholic priests.

The Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph has acknowledged that it had paid $25,000 in 1996 to settle an abuse claim against a priest, but did not release his name.
